Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UKCG, or Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus - IURD), in Portuguese) requests, from the IPS News website, its right of reply, regarding a report that goes by the title "Religion-Brazil: Intolerance Denounced at UN", published on July 3rd. To avoid even greater complications, UKCG clarifies that: 1 - The church considers, at the very least, the initiative of the Comittee Against Religious Intolerance (CCIR) as misdirected, when it denounces UCKG to the U.N Human Rights Council, although the church respects the Comittee's history and ideals. The CCIR lacks basic knowledge on the UCKG and its founder's, bishop Edir Macedo Bezerra, principles; 2 - It refuses to accept any and every kind of aggression, be it physical or verbal, specially those of religious nature; 3 - Contrary to what was published on the IPS News website, UCKG never led, consented or stimulated any physikcal or moral attack on Brazilian people that follow other religions. As a bearer of the byblical principles, UCKG is radically against any kind of violent acts; 4 - Never did UCKG portray, nor it ever will, Jews as "killers of Christ", Catholics as "devil worshippers", traditional Protestants as "false Christians" or Muslims as "demonic". Those are false and difamating claims. As an example, UCKG has built, in Rio de Janeiro, a cultural center with the world's biggest model of the city of Jerusalem. It is also a tribute to the Jewish community; 5 - The church strongly denies the accusation of practicing a xenophobic, sectarian and racist speech, based on exploiting the least favoured population. UCKG theological principles respect, inequivocally, the Brazilian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; 6 - It respects all other beliefs, although, in some cases, it disagrees on the religious doctrines that they spread. This is a right that is secured by the Brazilian Constitution. In a statement for Brazilian newspaper "Folha de S. Paulo", about the CCIR allegations to the UN, Ricardo Mariano, who is a PhD on Sociology, states that "the views adopted by the Universal Church (towards other religions) are motivated exclusively by religious issues"; 7 - The founder of UCKG, bishop Edir Macedo, is the major shareholder of Rede Record, Brazil's second largest television network, which transmits to over 165 countries around the world through Record International. Through the years, our country's public and advertisement market have learned not to confuse the owner's religious option from the editorial position of the several media outlets that belong to him. The illation that those media vehicles are used to attack other religions is nothing but rumours fed by rival communication groups, directly interested in mantaining a long-time monopoly on Brazilian media; 8 - The church didn't help found any political party - which is forbidden by Brazilian electoral laws. It does, however, have political representatives, as well as other churches. The Brazilian Republican Party doesn't have any connection with bishop Edir Macedo and it states, on its official website, the basic commitment to be a "democratic political institution, defending the common well-being and a free society". Its most well-known representative is Brazil's vice-president, José de Alencar, who is notoriously Catholic; 9 - It doesn't have any responsibility whatsoever on the lawsuits against the newspaper "Folha de S. Paulo". The curch, however, supports all the citizens that felt offended by the wave of attacks the newspaper perpetrated against the Pentecostal community. UCKG firmly believes that the freedom of speech and the right to justice are the main pillars of Democracy; 10 - UCKG promotes many social projects in Brazil and in other countries, many of them award-winning, that attend to thousands of needing people, children and handicapped - of all etnic groups, gender and religions; 11 - Contrary to what the CCIR affirms, UCKG is a worldwide reference on the support of marginalized people. It supports financially and mantains with voluntary workforce one of the biggest works on ressocializing and social assistance to minorities in Brazil and dozens of other countries, in institutions such as penitentiaries, youth detention centers, hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, asylums and orphanages; 12 - The church is present in more than 170 countries on the six continents, promoting evangelization and spreading the principles of the Holy Bible, which value and teach religious tolerance; 13 - It is responsible for one of the biggest evangelical works ever performed on Africa, the so-called 'Dark Continent', marked by poverty and racial prejudice. UCKD has legally established temples in 25 countries, all recognized by the local governments. Only in South Africa, there are over 160 temples. As an example, every week, eight thousand Southern Africans, mostly black people, fill UCKD's Cathedral at Soweto. A simple CCIR visit might corroborate the love and dedication that UCKD presents to South Africa's black and marginalized population. This work is usually led by white Brazilian bishops and priests; 14 - The biography of bishop Edir Macedo was released at the UN headquarters, in New York city, two years ago. A sign of good will and credibility towards a person that has a life story and religious ideals that are transparent and world-wide respected. The book evidences the separation between dogmae, politics, media and individual rights. To mix them all up, like CCIR did, is to create a dangerous and religiously prejudiced situation. DIREITO DE RESPOSTAA Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) solicita ao site IPS direito de resposta em relação a reportagem intitulada "Religion-Brazil: Intolerance Denounced at UN", publicada em 3 de julho.
Para evitar precipitações ainda mais graves, a IURD esclarece que: 1 - Considera, no mínimo, equivocada a iniciativa da Comissão Contra a Intolerância Religiosa do Brasil (CCIR) de denunciar a IURD às Organizações da Nações Unidas (ONU), embora respeite a história e os ideais desta Comissão. Faltou conhecimento básico sobre os princípios da Igreja e de seu fundador, bispo Edir Macedo Bezerra; 2 - Repudia todo e qualquer tipo de agressão, física e verbal, especialmente as que têm origem religiosa; 3 - Ao contrário do que publicou o site IPS, a IURD nunca liderou, consentiu ou estimulou qualquer ataque físico ou moral a brasileiros de outras religiões. Cumpridora dos princípios bíblicos-cristãos, a IURD é radicalmente contra todo e qualquer ato de violência; 4 - Nunca classificou, nem jamais classificará, judeus como "assassinos de Cristo", católicos como "adoradores do diabo", protestantes tradicionais como "falsos cristãos" e muçulmanos como "endemoninhados". Isso é calúnia e difamação. Como exemplo, construiu no Rio de Janeiro um centro cultural com a maior réplica do mundo da cidade de Jerusalém. Uma homenagem também à comunidade judaica; 5 - Repudia a acusação de praticar ?discurso xenofóbico, racista e de exploração da população carente?. A pregação teológica da IURD respeita, inequivocamente, a Constituição da República Federativa do Brasil e a Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos;
6 - Respeita todas as demais crenças, mas discorda da doutrina religiosa propagada por elas. É um direito assegurado pela Lei Maior, a Constituição da República Federativa do Brasil. Em declaração ao jornal brasileiro "Folha de S.Paulo", sobre a denúncia da CCIR à ONU, o doutor em sociologia Ricardo Mariano afirma que ?a atitude adotada pela Igreja Universal (em relação a outras religiões) é motivada por questões estritamente religiosas?; 7 - O fundador da IURD, bispo Edir Macedo, é acionário da Rede Record, a segunda maior emissora de televisão do Brasil, com sinal transmitido para 165 países através da Record Internacional. Há diversos anos, público e mercado publicitário do nosso país não confundem mais a opção religiosa do empresário com a posição editorial dos veículos que pertencem a ele. A ilação de que dessas mídias são usadas para atacar outras religiões corrobora um folclore fomentado por grupos de comunicação concorrentes diretamente interessados na manutenção de um monopólio quase secular; 8 - Não ajudou a fundar nenhum partido político ? o que é proibido pela legislação eleitoral brasileira. Possui representantes políticos, assim como outras. O Partido Republicano do Brasil (PRB) não tem nenhum vínculo com o bispo Edir Macedo e apresenta, em seu sítio oficial, o compromisso básico de ser uma ?instituição política democrática, defensora do bem comum e de uma sociedade livre?, como qualquer outro partido na esfera nacional. Tem como seu principal representante o vice-presidente da República, José Alencar, notoriamente católico; 9 - Não tem qualquer responsabilidade pelas ações judiciais propostas contra o jornal ?Folha de S. Paulo?. Mas apoia todos os cidadãos que se sentiram ofendidos pela onda de ataques desse jornal à comunidade evangélica. A IURD acredita que a liberdade de expressão e o direito à Justiça são os principais pilares da democracia; 10 - A IURD realiza diversos projetos sociais no Brasil e em outros países, muitos deles premiados, que atendem milhares de pessoas carentes, crianças e portadores de deficiências ? de todas as cores, sexos, raças e credos; 11 - Diferentemente do que afirma a CCIR, a IURD é referência mundial no apoio às populações marginalizadas. Apoia financeiramente e mantém com mão-de-obra voluntária um dos maiores trabalhos de ressocialização e assistência social junto às minorias excluídas do Brasil e em dezenas de outros países em instituições como presídios, reformatórios, hospitais, manicômios, asilos e orfanatos; 12 - Está presente em mais de 170 países, no mundo inteiro, promovendo a evangelização e a propagação dos princípios da Bíblia Sagrada, que prezam e ensinam a tolerância religiosa; 13 - É responsável por um dos maiores trabalhos evangelísticos já realizados na África, o chamado ?continente negro?, marcado pela miséria e pelo preconceito racial. A IURD tem templos legalmente estabelecidos em 25 países, com reconhecimento de todos os governos locais. Só na África do Sul, são mais de 160 templos. Toda semana, por exemplo, oito mil sul-africanos, a grande maioria de negros, lotam a Catedral da IURD em Soweto. Uma simples visita da CCIR pode constatar o apreço e a dedicação da IURD à população negra, sofrida e marginalizada daquele país. Esse trabalho geralmente é liderado por bispos e pastores brasileiros e brancos; 14 - Na sede da ONU, em Nova York, foi lançada a biografia do bispo Edir Macedo, há dois anos. Um sinal de prestígio e credibilidade de quem tem história de vida e ideais religiosos transparentes e respeitados em todo o mundo. Livro que deixa evidente a separação entre dogma, política, mídia e direitos individuais. Misturá-los, como fez a CCIR, é criar uma situação perigosa e de preconceito religioso.
